Shanghai Vanke Yan Nan Garden
Deep Carbon Bamboo Wall Cladding & Decking
Thermo Bamboo Cladding & Decking | Case Study
Vanke Yan Nan Garden in Shanghai’s Minhang District is a residential project completed in July 2025 that demonstrates how engineered bamboo can address common challenges in exterior cladding and decking. The owner wanted to enclose a traditional-style courtyard while preserving a sense of openness and using materials that would perform reliably over time.

Conventional timber was considered but ultimately not chosen due to concerns about moisture damage, insect infestation, and ongoing maintenance requirements in Shanghai’s humid climate. ZHUART Deep Carbon bamboo wall cladding and decking was selected instead. The material undergoes a thermal modification and high-pressure compression process, which improves its dimensional stability and resistance to moisture, decay, and termites. It also meets applicable fire safety standards for building cladding.

The architect specified vertically oriented deep carbon panels for the entry corridor and courtyard screens. The vertical layout helps the space feel taller and more open, while the spacing between panels allows filtered light and views of surrounding plants without sacrificing privacy. The deep brown color of the panels serves as a neutral background that works with stone, greenery, and other architectural elements.

On the terrace, deep carbon decking was laid to create a stable, slip-resistant outdoor floor surface. Its dense structure resists wear from foot traffic and furniture placement, while its warm, dark tone complements the overall courtyard aesthetic.

Since installation, the cladding has shown no signs of warping, cracking, or uneven color change. The decking has remained flat and stable under daily use. Routine cleaning with water and a soft brush has been sufficient to maintain the surface. If the owner wishes to preserve the original dark brown color, an application of water-based outdoor oil is recommended. Without oiling, the surface will gradually weather to a uniform silver-gray, which some users prefer.

With an estimated service life exceeding 25 years in exterior use, both products offer a durable alternative that reduces the need for frequent replacement.
