Thermo Bamboo Maintenance Guide

    For outdoor decking and cladding

    Why maintenance matters

After exposure to outdoor sun, rain, frost, and other harsh conditions, bamboo decking may discolor, develop minor cracks, or have a rough surface.

To extend the service life of bamboo decking and minimize weather damage, regular maintenance enhances its weathering resistance, making outdoor bamboo more durable in various environments.

With proper care, your boards can restore up to 80–90% of their original appearance, while reinforcing their weather resistance and extending their lifespan.

    Important for poolside decking:
Around swimming pools, if the boards are left unmaintained for long periods, the surface can become rough. Walking barefoot may cause discomfort or abrasion to the skin. Regular maintenance is strongly recommended in these areas.

    How to maintain?

    • Use WOCA oil (or another water-based outdoor oil), approx. 50 g/m².
    • Decking is recommended to be maintained once a year.
    • Wall cladding and grilles: maintenance cycle is once a year or depending on usage, as wall cladding is less exposed to external influences.
    • Keep the decking surface free of dirt with regular sweeping.

    Maintenance process

    1. Cleaning

    (1) Rinse the surface with clean water.

    (2) Mix cleaner with water (1:1 to 1:4 dilution) according to dirt level and apply.

    (3) Scrub along the grain direction of the bamboo using the silicon carbide disc or broom.

    (4) Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

    (5) Wait for the boards to dry completely—typically takes about 24 hours, although in hot, dry weather it may take as little as 4 hours, depending on conditions.

    2. Oiling application

    (1) Once fully dry, apply 1-2 layers of WOCA exterior oil (or equivalent) at approximately 50 g/m².

    (2) Work evenly with a brush or other applicator.

    (3) Wait 4 hours to dry before foot traffic, and 24 hours to fully dry before normal use, depending on climate.

    Best Practices & Tips

    • Without oiling, the surface will gradually turn grey in outdoor environment. Some may find this attractive, but oiling restores the original rich tone.
    • Sweeping off dirt regularly can help prevent staining and make maintenance easier.
    • Address spills immediately using mild detergent and water to avoid permanent marks.
    • Ensure proper drainage, as standing water can damage the bamboo.
    • Avoid strong acids, alkalis, or harsh high-pressure cleaning, which may erode the surface.
