Promoting Green Innovation in the Wood Industry

From November 19 to 20, 2017, the 2nd China Green Wood Industry Conference and the 10th China Wood Protection Industry Conference, co-organized by ZHUART, took place successfully in Nanping, Fujian Province.

Themed “Bamboo and Wood Innovation: Connectivity for Mutual Prosperity,” the conference brought together over 350 participants, including government officials from China and Finland, industry organizations, leading academics, and key enterprise representatives. Discussions centered on wood preservation, fire retardance, energy-efficient drying, material modification, thermal treatment, and the recycling of wood waste, all aimed at fostering green and sustainable development within the wood protection industry.

    Insights from Key Leaders

Hu Runhua, Director of the Raw Materials Industry Division at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, highlighted in his speech that green development is the future of the wood industry. He praised the China Wood Protection Industry Association’s long-standing efforts to advocate for “green wood industry” development principles.

Chen Wenpan, Deputy Mayor of Jianyang District, Nanping City, emphasized that enhancing wood and bamboo performance through technological innovation expands their applications and adds value. He reaffirmed the district’s focus on bamboo and wood industries as a pillar for its “3+3” industrial strategy, committing to bolstering technological innovation and driving growth in the region.

Liu Nengwen, Director of the National Timber Saving and Development Center, noted that the conference provided a vital platform for exploring new ideas and strategies for green development in China’s wood industry. He shared data showing that China has become the largest producer and consumer of wood products globally, with an annual processing output value exceeding 2 trillion RMB and wood consumption exceeding 570 million cubic meters. With the 2017 nationwide ban on commercial logging in natural forests, Liu emphasized the need to adopt “source expansion” and “resource conservation” strategies to secure green and sustainable development for the wood industry.

Liu Jingjiang, a representative from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, highlighted the importance of promoting green construction practices and energy efficiency. He pointed out that major initiatives like the Beijing Sub-Center and Xiong’an New Area developments are setting new standards for green buildings and materials. Rational and efficient use of wood will play a vital role in the evolution of green construction materials.

Insights and Collaboration for Green Development

During the conference, Mr. Tao Yiming, Chairman of the China Wood Protection Industry Association, delivered a keynote speech titled “Jointly Advancing the Green Development of China’s Wood Protection Industry.” He reviewed the industry’s achievements over the past 15 years, addressed current challenges, and proposed strategic measures for its future growth.

Tao emphasized that while China’s wood protection industry has a long history, the journey toward industrialization, specialization, and large-scale operations only truly began in the past two decades. He identified several areas where the industry lags behind developed nations, including policy support, technological innovation, industrial scale, product quality, and market regulation. His recommendations included:

    > Accelerating policy research to create a favorable environment for wood protection.
    > Increasing investments in technological innovation to enhance development.
    > Strengthening standards and market oversight to regulate wood protection practices.
    > Enhancing the role of industry organizations to promote corporate self-discipline.
    > Expanding international technical exchange and cooperation to bolster global competitiveness.

The Finnish delegation also actively participated in the discussions. Mr. Reima Sutinen, Advisor to Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, and Mr. Jyrki Mantere from the Finnish Trade, Investment, and Tourism Promotion Agency, shared insights into Finland’s advancements in wood preservation and thermal treatment technologies.

Mr. He Pincai, Chairman of Zhejiang ZHUART Bamboo Industry Technology Co., Ltd., delivered a presentation titled “The Current Status and Future Trends of China’s Bamboo Industry,” providing valuable insights into the sector’s development.

    A Platform for Collaboration

In addition to the main conference, several concurrent events took place:

    > The 4th Council Meeting of the 2nd Session of the China Wood Protection Industry Association.
    > The Sino-Finnish Roundtable on Wood Preservation and Thermal Treatment Industry Collaboration.
    > The Launch Ceremony of the Wood Energy-Efficient Drying Subcommittee of the China Wood Protection Industry Association.
